The Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO (R5) racing car was used in the American IMSA GTO racing series in 1989 . Following previous successes in rallying and winning the the United States based Trans-AM Series in 1988 with the Audi 200 Quattro Trans-AM the superiority of quattro drive was to demonstrated on road circuits. This IMSA GTO racing legend is the only factory-fitted racing car based on the Audi 80/90 B3 and it challenged the competition with incredible results.
The 90 Quattro IMSA GTO is powered by a turbocharged 5-cylinder aluminium inline engine with 2.2 litre displacement, derived from the Audi Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak, which, however, delivers up to 530 kW (720 hp). The power is transmitted to the road via a 6-speed gearbox, with one gear blocked due to the IMSA regulations, and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
The body of the 90 quattro IMSA GTO is similar to the production model Audi 90, but has nothing in common with it, apart for the standard steel roof specified in the regulations. The body consists of a tubular frame with plastic outer skin. So the weight could be reduced to 1206 kg. Compared to the production version, the racing car is much wider and equipped with a rear spoiler, with a two-tier rear wing on fast routes.
Audi did not start at the two endurance races in Daytona and Sebring, which is why it was no longer possible to catch up with Ford at the end of the season. Audi finished second in the championship standings with 195 points, 45 points behind Ford. In 1990 Audi left the American race tracks and started in the DTM with the Audi V8 Quattro.
