Heavily influenced by the Can-Am Championship-winning M8A and M8B racers, the McLaren M8C was built purely as a customer car. In total fifteen were produced, mainly for use in the Can-Am series and its European equivalent, the Interserie.
Similar in appearance to its works predecessors, the M8C could be easily distinguished from the M8B by the fact that its rear wing was much lower down and mounted to the chassis (elevated, suspension-mounted wings had been banned following the 1969 Can-Am season).
Unlike its older siblings the M8C’s aluminum monocoque chassis did not use the engine as a stressed member, which allowed customers to choose between Ford and Chevrolet engines (this particular car employs a 650-bhp, 7.0-liter Chevy unit that can take it to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds -- and to a top speed of 205 mph). Although the M8C proved competitive in both the 1970 and 1971 Can-Am seasons, however, it was no match for its works M8D and M8F rivals.
