The 356A 1600GS Carrera GT was the high performance version of the 356A. With the Carrera nameplate, Porsche produced their first real production sports car. Named after Porsche's victory at the Carrera Panamericana in '52, '53 and '54, this model mated the potent four-camshaft engine from the 550 RS Spyder into the 356's unassuming chassis. By 1958, it used a larger displacement version better suited for the 1600cc class, which was much more free-revving and powerful.

The upgraded version (S1) of the 356A 1600GS Carrera GT is an evolved track version. It's designed to have similar performance to 356's racing in the SCCA in the early 60's.
Main upgrades:
- Weight reduction (no bumpers and lightweighting)
- Lowered suspension and center of gravity
- More suspension setup options
- Race engine 150+HP (based on Willhoit Restauration dyno of type 692/3A engine bored to 1755cc), featuring improved low-end torque and higher rev limit.
- Improved brakes
